Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa … starting a Canadian WASH dialogue with HE Maria Mutagamba

HE Maria Mutagamba: “Mama Africa for WASH”

WASH Canada, UNU-INWEH and H2O 4 All, are honored to host the Hon. Maria Mutagamba as the keynote speaker at our women-in-water series on September 18-20.

The Hon. Maria Emilly Lubega Mutagamba has been the Minister of Water and Environment of Uganda from 2006-August 2012.

She is the first woman to be appointed Minister of Water in her country. She was elected president of the African Ministers’ Council on Water in 2004 for two years. She is the coordinator, Global Women Leaders Forum for Water and Sanitation and a member of the Nile Council of Ministers.

She is a strong advocate for water issues in Africa and has been promoting the WASH message at both national and international levels. She has led the charge in countless delegations and regional and international conferences in hopes of bringing sanitation and water into the global spotlight. She is fighting for her country to meet the Millennium Development Goals in bringing water and sanitation to its town and cities. The water sector, essential for poverty eradication, is one of the Ugandan government’s priority areas.

Because of her hard work in ensuring water and sanitation for all on the continent during the Africa Water Week she was recognized and accorded the title of “Mama Africa for WASH.”
